In 2017, a red band at the top and bottom were added to symbolise "the efforts and sacrifices that the people of Mauritania will keep consenting, to the price of their blood, to defend their territory",[6] in a referendum on 5 August 2017, scheduled by president Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz which contained among other constitutional amendments a modification of the national flag and anthem. The national flag of Mauritania is a rectangular canvas of red and green color. Three horizontal stripes: narrow upper and lower ones, colored red, as well as a wide middle one, colored green. In the center of the green stripe is a cup-shaped thin moon with a yellow star in the center of it.
The green color of the flag is associated with Islam, and the yellow color is associated with the Sahara Desert. The red stripes have a connection with the shed blood of the resistance against the French colonialists.
